Many of them, who have already been nominated for the ‘Ballon d'Or’ or the Yashin Trophy, have proved their place amongst the elite and rose to the occasion under the greatest pressure without a single slip-up.
Others, by contrast, have made stunning debuts that have taken the whole world by surprise, writing tales of heroism that will remain etched in the memory of the World Cup forever.
All of them have given us unforgettable moments and were instrumental in ensuring this tournament is remembered as ‘the World Cup of goalkeepers’.
With that in mind, below we take a look at the 10 goalkeepers who made their mark at the 2026 tournament and why they are so vital to their national teams.
Jordan Pickford (England)
Jordan Pickford drew on his vast experience to lead England to the quarter-finals, marshalling the defence to top Group L and navigate some extremely tense matches.
Along the way, the goalkeeper made history by equalling the legendary Peter Shilton’s iconic record for World Cup appearances and reaffirmed his status as the undisputed first-choice goalkeeper for the ‘Three Lions’.
Orlando Gill (Paraguay)
Orlando Gill was at the heart of one of the most unforgettable stories of this World Cup, guiding Paraguay to the round of 16 before narrowly losing to France.
His finest hour came in the round of 32, where he produced a true masterpiece: six miraculous saves against Germany and two penalties saved in a historic penalty shoot-out that had the world on the edge of its seat.
Furthermore, Gill is the goalkeeper with the highest number of saves in the tournament (28). Without a doubt, the San Lorenzo de Almagro goalkeeper has been one of the tournament’s biggest revelations so far.
Diogo Costa (Portugal)
Diogo Costa, nominated for the Yashin Trophy in 2024, put in solid performances that guided Portugal to the round of 16, particularly in the victory over Croatia in that round.
In that decisive match, the Portuguese goalkeeper made five key saves to preserve his side’s narrow lead and demonstrated absolute reliability before his team went on to lose 1–0 to Spain in the next round.
The Portuguese goalkeeper ranks third among goalkeepers for the highest number of saves, with a total of 20 saves throughout his time at the World Cup.
Gregor Kobel (Switzerland)
Gregor Kobel, who was nominated for the Yashin Trophy in 2024, confidently took on the role of leader for his country and became the mainstay that carried Switzerland through to the quarter-finals.
He demonstrated his quality by keeping a clean sheet against Algeria in the round of 16 and then held out for a goalless draw against Colombia before progressing via a penalty shoot-out.
Unai Simón (Spain)
Unai Simón, another player nominated for the Yashin Trophy, remained solid in goal for Spain and etched his name into the record books by breaking a historic World Cup record.
The Athletic Club goalkeeper reached 519 consecutive minutes without conceding a goal, becoming the goalkeeper with the longest unbeaten run ever recorded in the tournament.
Furthermore, he has yet to concede a goal and has kept five consecutive clean sheets up to the quarter-final stage. A solid performance, backed by a strong defensive display from the team.
Yassine Bounou (Morocco)
Yassine Bounou, nominated for the ‘Ballon d'Or’ and the Yashin Trophy, was once again Morocco’s standout player in another memorable World Cup campaign, crowned by a place in the quarter-finals.
The Moroccan goalkeeper shone with some monumental saves at this World Cup, such as the penalty he saved from Crysencio Summerville in the shoot-out against the Netherlands in the round of 16.
If Morocco reached this stage, it is because they had Bono as a reliable presence between the posts. A legend in his country.
Thibaut Courtois (Belgium)
Thibaut Courtois, a three-time nominee for the ‘Ballon d'Or’, proved that his class remains undiminished and was instrumental in Belgium’s progress to the quarter-finals.
The winner of the 2022 Yashin Trophy kept the ‘Red Devils’ in the game with phenomenal saves to top Group G and subsequently see off the hosts, the United States, in the round of 16.
His presence is one of the key factors keeping Belgium a real threat in the competition, in what will be the final outing for this ‘golden generation’ of Belgian football.
Raúl Rangel (Mexico)
The Mexican goalkeeper rose to the enormous pressure of being one of the tournament’s hosts and taking over the starting spot from the legendary Guillermo ‘Memo’ Ochoa.
Thanks to his performances, Rangel helped ‘El Tri’ win Group A and kept four consecutive clean sheets, proving himself a giant at the legendary Estadio Azteca right through to the round of 16.
Although Rangel’s impressive run came to an end following a defeat to England, his tournament performance left a strong impression on the international stage and allowed him to cement his place between the Mexican posts for the future.
Vozinha (Cape Verde)
Cape Verde’s charismatic goalkeeper, Vozinha, became one of the tournament’s global sensations by guiding his side to a historic qualification for the round of 16.
The veteran goalkeeper thwarted Spain in a memorable goalless draw and made seven spectacular saves against Argentina, before going down with honour in extra time.
As a side note, Vozinha ended his World Cup campaign with over 20 million followers on social media. Without a doubt, one of the standout performances of this World Cup.
Ronwen Williams (South Africa)
The South African captain, who was nominated for the Yashin Trophy, enjoyed an excellent tournament, leading his nation to the last 16 of the competition.
As if that weren’t enough, Ronwen Williams dazzled everyone by setting a spectacular World Cup record: he completed 77 successful passes in the match against Canada.
Outside this ranking, there are goalkeepers who also deserve a special mention for their incredible performances at the World Cup.
These include Ørjan Nyland (Norway), Lionel Mpasi (DR Congo), Eloy Room (Curaçao), Zion Susuki (Japan), Mostafa Shobeir (Egypt) and Alireza Beiranvand (Iran).
