An extended international break – consisting of four fixtures for many nations - presents several 2026 Ballon d’Or nominees with an opportunity to reach a meaningful personal landmark in the weeks ahead.

For Kylian Mbappe, still in prolific form after firing 10 World Cup goals this summer, forthcoming games against Turkey, Italy and Belgium (twice) affords him the chance to further cement his status as France’s record goal-scorer.

Presently, the Real Madrid striker is on 66 goals for Les Bleus, a highly impressive tally that is far beyond the reach of any current French player.

Yet it will not have bypassed the 27-year-old’s attention that an incredible achievement is within his means, should he continue to convert for France for several more years to come. That of becoming only the fourth ever player to score 100+ officially recognised international goals.

The three forwards who have done this, incidentally, are Iran’s Ali Daei along with Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, multiple Ballon d’Or winners both.

This heightened aspiration will also no doubt be on Harry Kane’s radar, the record-breaking England striker preparing for another handful of outings for the Three Lions while on 85 goals.

Remarkably, that makes Kane the joint-eighth most prolific goal-scorer in the history of international football.

The half-a-century club

Extending on records already broken, all while chipping away towards an extraordinary career feat, is one thing. Perhaps more significant is what awaits Nuno Mendes should he start for Portugal on Thursday evening when hosting Wales.

Lining up in Lisbon, the 2026 Ballon d’Or nominated full-back will be in receipt of a 50th cap for his country, a journey that has included a 2024/25 Nations League triumph as well as six World Cup appearances.

To date, only 54 players have reached a half-century of caps for Portugal, that list containing several stars boasting a proud Ballon d’Or legacy, not least Ronaldo and Luis Figo.

The PSG defender is not the only 2026 nominee nearing 50 international appearances this autumn, though in the case of Dayot Upamecano the wait may stretch to the November break.

Currently on 46 caps for France, the Bayern Munich centre-back is expected to be rotated in the four games to come, as new head coach Zinedine Zidane experiments with his defensive options.

Lastly, there is Khvicha Kvaratskhelia to consider and his quest to become Georgia’s all-time leading goal-scorer.

The three-time Ballon d’Or nominee is three off equalling Shota Arveladze’s international tally of 66 and is primed to shine against Ukraine, Hungary and Northern Ireland (twice).
