In mid-2017, an unprecedented transfer changed the history of women’s football in Spain. For the first time, two domestic clubs agreed on a paid transfer of a female footballer.

At the time, FC Barcelona paid 50,000 euros to Atlético de Madrid to secure the services of a 22-year-old defender named María Pilar “Mapi” León.

That deal, a pioneering move as it was the first paid transfer on the domestic market, broke down barriers and marked an unprecedented turning point. Not only for Spanish football, but also for the Catalan club itself.

The arrival of ‘Mapi’ León in Barcelona became the cornerstone upon which the most glorious era in the Catalan team’s history was built.

From promising full-back to perfect centre-back

‘Mapi’ León arrived in Barcelona on the strength of her qualities as a left-back with great attacking vision and excellent ball control. However, following her arrival, she underwent a tactical metamorphosis that transformed her into one of the best defenders on the planet.

Little by little, she established herself as the quintessential modern centre-back: aggressive and decisive in one-on-one situations, focused on reading the play and displaying undeniable vocal leadership. The Aragonese player brought a dramatic leap in quality to the team, dominating the position for almost a decade.

León was crucial in stifling opposition attacks whilst, at the same time, initiating clean ball progression from the back. Furthermore, thanks to the precision of her left foot, she turned corner kicks and free-kicks into a constant goal threat.

The statistics of a legend

‘Mapi’s’ signing coincided with Barça’s consolidation at the very top of European football. Alongside stars such as Alexia Putellas, the centre-back was one of the key architects who transformed the club into the dominant force it is today.

After nine golden seasons wearing the Blaugrana shirt, her legacy is immortalised in the history books with staggering statistics:

  • 314 matches played: The eighth player with the most appearances in the history of FC Barcelona Femení.

  • 22 goals scored: The third-highest scoring defender in the section’s history, behind only legends such as Marta Torrejón and Melanie Serrano.

  • 27 titles won: A key player in the club’s four Champions League triumphs, in addition to seven league titles, seven Copa de la Reina titles, six Spanish Super Cups and three Copa Catalunya titles.

Everything comes to an end… and a fitting finale

In mid-2026, ‘Mapi’ León brought her glorious spell at FC Barcelona to a close to take on a new professional challenge with the London City Lionesses.

However, her final season in the Blaugrana shirt was so masterful that it served as the perfect finale to her glorious career.

Her dominance in the most important matches, her defensive solidity and her impact on the team’s play did not go unnoticed on the international stage.

That consistency at the highest level earned her a nomination for the 2026 Ballon d'Or. It is the second time she has been shortlisted for the award.

‘Mapi’ sets off on her new adventure with the satisfaction of a job well done: not only as the defender who changed Barcelona’s fortunes for 50,000 euros, but as a legend in the history of Spanish football.
