When Khadija 'Bunny' Shaw steps onto a football pitch, comfort zones simply cease to exist. Honored with a nomination for the 2026 Ballon d'Or following a historic season with Manchester City, the Jamaican forward has evolved far beyond a pure goalscoring phenomenon—she has become the uncompromising heart and soul of a champion team.

A Journey Forged in Resilience and Passion

Born in Spanish Town, Jamaica, as the youngest of 13 siblings, Shaw earned her famous nickname 'Bunny' from her brother due to her childhood love of carrots. Her path to the pinnacle of world football was paved with determination and versatility. After showcasing her talent at St. Jago High School, she moved to the United States, shining at Eastern Florida State College before transferring to the University of Tennessee. It was under coach Brian Pensky with the Tennessee Volunteers that Shaw made a crucial career pivot, converting from a midfielder into a ruthless central striker and earning SEC Offensive Player of the Year honours in 2018.

Passing on the NWSL Draft to test herself in Europe, Shaw signed with French club Bordeaux in 2019. Her impact in Division 1 Féminine was immediate, finishing as the league's top scorer in the 2020/21 season with 22 goals. That explosive form earned her a move to Manchester City in July 2021, setting the stage for a dominant era in English football.

Rewriting the Record Books at Manchester City

At 29 years old, Shaw's statistical footprint in the Women's Super League is nothing short of breathtaking. She is Manchester City's all-time top goalscorer as well as Jamaica's all-time record scorer across both men's and women's football. Holding the record for the most hat-tricks in WSL history, she etched her name further into legend during the 2025/26 campaign by scoring four goals against Aston Villa to surpass 100 goals for City, receiving video tributes from sporting icons like Usain Bolt and Ian Wright.

Later in the campaign on March 21, 2026, Shaw broke the record for the fastest hat-trick in WSL history, netting three times in just 12 minutes and 37 seconds during a 5–2 win against Tottenham Hotspur. Her relentless production—21 goals in 22 matches during the 2025/26 league campaign—secured her third consecutive WSL Golden Boot and fired City to a historic domestic double comprising the WSL title and the Women's FA Cup.

The Mentality of an Elite Winner

What truly sets Shaw apart, however, is her insatiable demand for excellence. "I keep driving my personal standards because over the years I've noticed it rub off on everyone else," Shaw shared after claiming her PFA award. "The girls say I'm hard on myself. But I want to be better and help the team achieve the highest of highs."

That standard-setting mentality reshaped City's environment under manager Andree Jeglertz. "If we can get it right on the pitch, we can be deadly. We can be unstoppable if we focus on the fine details," Shaw noted. Her leadership on and off the pitch convinced City to secure her future with a new four-year contract, warding off intense competition from rival clubs. As City prepare for their return to the UEFA Women's Champions League, Shaw's blend of humbling humility and elite winning instinct ensures that neither she nor her team will ever settle for second best.
