Origins and Early Career Journey

Born on October 9, 1990, in Göppingen, Germany, Ann-Katrin Berger began playing football at the age of four. Interestingly, she spent her early youth playing as a striker, midfielder, and defender before switching to goalkeeping at age 16. She began her senior career at VfL Sindelfingen before moving to 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam, where she won the Frauen-Bundesliga title in 2012. Berger subsequently moved abroad, playing for Paris Saint-Germain and Birmingham City before establishing herself among the world's best during a trophy-laden five-year spell at Chelsea, where she won four consecutive Women's Super League titles and the 2020–21 Golden Glove.

Her rise to the top of world football is made even more remarkable by her extraordinary personal resilience. Berger was twice diagnosed with thyroid cancer—first in 2017 while at Birmingham City and again in 2022—overcoming both diagnoses with remarkable determination to return to the highest level of professional sports.

A Stellar Track Record for Club and Country

Since joining NJ/NY Gotham FC in 2024, Berger has further solidified her status as one of global football's elite goalkeepers. Named the 2024 NWSL Goalkeeper of the Year, Berger set a new club benchmark by surpassing Kailen Sheridan for the most regular-season wins in Gotham FC history—achieving the milestone in 45 fewer matches. In September 2025, she tied Gotham's single-season shutout record with her eighth clean sheet in a match against San Diego, matching Brittany Cameron's 2013 mark and her own 2024 tally.

On the international stage, Berger starred during Germany's run to the UEFA Women's Euro semifinals. Her stretching redirection of a deflected shot was widely acclaimed as the save of the tournament, cementing her reputation on the international scene.

Ballon d'Or Recognition and the Road Ahead

Berger was recognized as the runner-up for the 2025 Women's Yashin Trophy at the Ballon d'Or ceremony in September 2025 alongside Gotham teammate Esther González. As France Football prepares for its historic 70th anniversary ceremony on October 26, 2026 in London, the full shortlists—including the five-player category for Women's Goalkeeper of the Year—will be officially announced on September 8.

Despite facing physical hurdles, including an abdomen injury sustained during the Concacaf W Champions Cup semifinal against Club América in Pachuca, Mexico, Berger's remarkable commanding presence in net keeps her at the pinnacle of modern goalkeeping.
