In recent times, Lamine Yamal has established himself as one of the leading figures in elite football and as a true global icon.

Jerseys bearing his name are sold all over the world. These days, it’s not unusual to see ‘Lamine Yamal’ written on the backs of children’s shirts anywhere on the planet.

However, few people are aware of a key detail regarding his identity: Yamal is not his surname. It is his middle name.

Unlike most footballers, who choose their father’s or mother’s surname to have printed on the back of their shirts, the striker uses both his given names: Lamine Yamal.

Behind this decision lies a moving story of solidarity and gratitude that his family played a part in before he was even born.

The origin of the name ‘Lamine Yamal’

To understand the origin of his name, we must go back to the time before his birth in Esplugues de Llobregat, when his parents, Mounir Nasraoui and Shaila Ebana, were living in the Rocafonda neighbourhood of Mataró.

The couple’s financial situation was extremely difficult, and they were struggling to meet their basic needs.

In his book *The Lamine Yamal Phenomenon*, journalist Pedro Molina describes the circumstances his parents faced: “Like any first-time parents, they were anxious about their new life, compounded by the fact that they were living from hand to mouth.”

Amidst this instability, two friends from the neighbourhood became a vital source of support for the family during the pregnancy and the birth of their son.

One of them was a neighbour of Gambian origin who worked as a taxi driver in Mataró. His name was Lamine (which means ‘the faithful’ in Arabic).

The other was a friend of African origin who was very close to the family. His name was Yamal (which means ‘beauty’ in Arabic).

In recognition of the unconditional support these two men provided during the toughest months, Mounir and Shaila promised to name their future son after them.

“In gratitude to their steadfast friends, they named him Lamine Yamal,” explains Molina in his book. A story that few people knew about until now.

The little boy’s upbringing continued amidst sacrifices and support from social services, but the promise made to those two neighbours was sealed forever. Lamine Yamal Nasraoui Ebana.

Pride on his back

Although Lamine is proud of his surnames, Nasraoui and Ebana, wearing “Lamine Yamal” on his shirt serves as a constant reminder of his origins.

Every time he takes to the pitch for Barcelona or the national team, the two-time Kopa Trophy winner pays tribute to the loyalty of those neighbours and the efforts of his family.

His name on the back of his shirt is a symbol of a promise kept and a truly moving story of resilience.

Lamine and Yamal. Always.
