Lionel Messi continues to add accolades to a career that seems to know no bounds in international football. It may sound repetitive, but it is the plain truth.

On this occasion, Guinness World Records has officially recognised four new historic records set by the Argentine star during this year’s World Cup.

This recognition comes at a very special time for the captain of the Argentina national team, who has just turned 39 and continues to prove his relevance and impact, despite the inevitable passage of time.

The prestigious world records organisation has published the list of new milestones that place the eight-time winner of the ‘Ballon d'Or’ among the most important figures in World Cup history.

Each of the records certified by Guinness reflects the footballer’s technical quality as well as his astonishing consistency throughout the tournaments in which he has taken part.

Since his debut at the 2006 World Cup, the Rosario-born player has been building a statistical legacy that will be extremely difficult to replicate or surpass in the modern era.

Below, we take a detailed look at the four historic records that Guinness World Records formally validated in June 2026.

Messi’s four Guinness World Records

  • Most goals scored by a player at the FIFA World Cup: 18

  • Most matches played at the FIFA World Cup by an individual: 28

  • Most matches won by a player at the FIFA World Cup: 18

  • Most minutes played at the FIFA World Cup: 2,489

The king of goals with 18 strikes

The first record highlighted by the organisation is that for the highest number of goals scored by a player in the history of the World Cup.

Messi reached the impressive tally of 18 goals and became the World Cup’s all-time leading goalscorer, definitively surpassing Miroslav Klose’s historic record (16 goals).

Record appearances with 28 matches played

The Argentine captain’s consistency and longevity are reflected in his second Guinness World Record, which certifies a total of 28 World Cup appearances.

No other footballer in the history of the tournament has played more matches than Messi at a World Cup. The statistic has been officially validated.

This achievement saw him surpass the previous record held by the legendary German midfielder Lothar Matthäus, who played 25 World Cup matches.

The player with the most World Cup victories

Messi’s impact on the pitch is not only measured in individual honours, but also in positive team results.

The Argentine captain has, to date, racked up 18 World Cup wins, becoming the player with the most victories in the competition’s history.

Messi has thus also surpassed the previous record held by Miroslav Klose, who led the table of all-time winners with 17 victories.

Undisputed leader in minutes played

The fourth and final Guinness World Record recognises Messi as the player with the most net playing time in the tournament’s history, having clocked up a total of 2,489 minutes on the pitch.

This milestone highlights his physical stamina and the vital role he has played for his respective managers throughout his career.

With this record, the forward has surpassed the historic mark set by the legendary Italian defender Paolo Maldini, who had accumulated 2,217 minutes played.

Will there be room for more of Messi’s records at the 2026 World Cup?

The way things are going, it certainly looks as though there will be more
