A tribute that goes beyond the world of football

Whilst the award recognises a year of outstanding performances between the posts, Athletic Club’s goalkeeper chose instead to turn the spotlight on those who have shaped his character. As he received his award, Unai Simón paid an emotional tribute to Koldo Asua, an iconic figure at the Bilbao youth academy

“He taught me that what matters isn’t titles, victories or individual honours, but the legacy you leave behind when you’re gone.”

Also paying tribute to Ángel Iribar, a living legend of the Basque club, the Spanish goalkeeper emphasised that a career is not defined by a list of honours, but by the values passed down from one generation to the next.

A trophy shared with his loved ones and mentors

Surrounded by the world’s footballing elite, the Spanish international was keen to include his entire inner circle in this triumph: his family, his partner, his childhood friends, as well as his long-standing coaches and team-mates.

Through this heartfelt speech, Unai Simón emphasised that a goalkeeper never reaches the top alone. More than just a string of spectacular saves on his line, the Spaniard wishes above all to leave a lasting impression through his loyalty to his values and his respect for those who have supported him. A fine lesson in humility.
