Yan Diomandé has established himself as one of the most dazzling new talents in world football in 2026.

After shining for the Ivory Coast at the World Cup and becoming the most expensive signing in Real Madrid’s history, the 19-year-old winger cemented his place amongst the elite with his nomination for the Young Player of the Year award.

However, the road to the top was far from easy.

Behind his success and his sensational rise to prominence lies a story marked by poverty, constant rejection and a family tragedy that changed his life forever.

White flip-flops and a dream in the dark

In a home in Abidjan where 25 people slept, Diomandé took his first kicks at the ball on the ground whilst wearing white flip-flops.

He would wait for his mother to fall asleep before turning on the television with the volume set to just two bars and dreaming of being like the footballers on the screen.

With no money to spare, he wrote ‘Ronaldo 7’ by hand on the back of a replica shirt of his idol.

It wasn’t until he was ten that his family managed to buy him his first pair of football boots, a treasure so precious that he would sleep clutching them.

Just as he would hug his little sister, Roxane, his greatest support and confidante, whom he himself referred to as ‘his agent’.

Rejection and opportunity at Leganés

His talent was so great that, at the age of 15, he travelled to the United States to try out for a talent-scouting programme.

Despite receiving praise from established footballers such as Eberechi Eze and Michael Olise, various clubs around the world turned him away.

With his visa having expired, he returned to the Ivory Coast in tears. It was Roxane who encouraged him not to give up until CD Leganés finalised his signing in November 2024.

A few months later, he fulfilled his dream of making his debut at none other than the legendary Santiago Bernabéu. That boy from Abidjan had achieved his dream.

However, he had not yet suffered the hardest blow of his life.

The tragedy and the letter to his sister

Weeks after his debut in Spain, Diomandé received the saddest of news: Roxane had died at the age of 15.

According to police reports, someone had slipped a foreign substance into her drink and the young girl did not survive.

The news left the striker devastated and in a state of utter grief.

In a heart-wrenching open letter published in The Players’ Tribune, the Ivorian footballer paid tribute to the promise that now drives him to carry on.

“The pitch is the only place where I feel at peace and can talk to you. You always said I could be better than Cristiano. I’m going to make your prediction come true, I swear to you. I’ll prove you were right, or I’ll die trying,” wrote Diomandé.

The legacy of unshakeable faith

Since Roxane’s death, the memory of his sister has become the driving force behind a truly meteoric rise.

In just 18 months, Diomandé went from making his debut for Leganés to bursting onto the scene at RB Leipzig, shining at the 2026 World Cup with the Ivory Coast and becoming the most expensive signing in Real Madrid’s history.

Today, having established himself amongst the very best and nominated for Young Player of the Year, the forward shows that record-breaking figures and media attention are secondary.

His true mission has not changed: to take to the pitch and fulfil, in every match, the destiny his sister predicted before the world even knew his name.
