2026 has been a year of great excitement for football fans.

Unforgettable matches, fierce title races, explosive debuts, a World Cup… But perhaps no event has marked the year quite as much as the farewell from the international stage of three of the greatest players of the 21st century: Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Neymar.

Over more than two decades, the three have helped shape the game of football as we know it. They were at the heart of historic moments and led their national teams to triumphs that will remain forever etched in the memories of fans.

Now, with their international careers drawing to a close, it is time to look at the statistics and compare the legacies of three players who defined a generation.

How it all began: their international debuts

Cristiano Ronaldo was the first of the three to make his senior international debut, which is hardly a surprise, as he is also the oldest. His first match for Portugal took place on 20 August 2003.

Two years later, on 17 August 2005, Lionel Messi played his first match for Argentina’s senior national team.

Finally, on 10 August 2010, Neymar made his debut for the Brazilian national team, seven years after Cristiano and five years after Messi.

All three were just 18 years old when they first pulled on the shirts of their respective senior national teams.

Longevity: over 500 international matches

Cristiano ended his time with Portugal having played 234 matches, over an international career spanning just over 23 years.

He spent over 18,600 minutes on the pitch for the national team.

That is 88 matches more than João Moutinho, the second-most capped Portuguese player, who made 146 appearances.

What’s more, Cristiano ended his career as the player with the most appearances for a national team in the history of football.

His last match for Portugal took place on 24 September 2026, at the age of 41.

Messi was not far behind.

He made 208 appearances for Argentina over a career spanning just over 21 years, totalling more than 17,200 minutes on the pitch.

He played 61 more matches than Javier Mascherano, the second-most capped Argentine, who made 147 appearances.

Messi played his last match for Argentina on 6 October 2026, aged 39.

Neymar, for his part, ended his career with 130 appearances for Brazil, in an international career that lasted more than 15 years.

He spent over 10,600 minutes on the pitch.

He ranks second among players with the most appearances for the Brazilian national team, behind only Cafu, who played 143 matches.

Neymar played his last match for Brazil on 5 July 2026, aged 34.

The goals: three legendary top scorers

Cristiano is not only closing in on the 1,000-goal mark in his career. He is also the all-time leading goalscorer in international football, with 146 goals for Portugal.

That is almost 100 goals more than Pauleta, the second-highest goalscorer in the history of the Portuguese national team, with 47.

His most prolific year for Portugal was 2019, when he found the net 14 times.

His highest-scoring matches were the victories over Andorra (6–0), on 7 October 2016, in the World Cup qualifiers, and against Lithuania (5–1), on 10 September 2019, in the Euro qualifiers. Cristiano scored four goals in each match.

In total, he has scored ten hat-tricks for Portugal and provided 45 assists for the national team.

Messi is just behind Cristiano in the all-time rankings, with 126 goals for Argentina.

That is 70 goals more than Gabriel Batistuta, the national team’s second-highest goalscorer of all time, with 56.

Messi’s most prolific year for Argentina was 2022, the very year he won the World Cup, with 18 goals.

That year, he also recorded his highest-scoring match for the national team: he scored all five goals in the 5–0 victory over Estonia in a friendly played on 5 June.

In total, Messi has scored 11 hat-tricks and provided 69 assists for the Argentine national team.

Neymar, for his part, ended his career as the all-time leading goalscorer for the Brazilian national team, with 80 goals.

He surpassed Pelé’s previous record of 77 goals.

His most prolific year for Brazil was 2014, when he scored 15 goals.

It was also in that year that Neymar recorded his highest-scoring match for the national team: he found the net four times in a 4–0 victory over Japan in a friendly played on 13 October.

Neymar has scored four hat-tricks and provided 59 assists for Brazil.

The titles: a legacy in the colours of their nations

Cristiano captained Portugal in 172 matches and led the national team to three major titles.

The first was Euro 2016, the first major title in the history of Portuguese football. This was followed by two UEFA Nations League titles: the inaugural edition in 2018–19 and the 2024–25 season.

Messi captained Argentina in 133 matches and led the team to four major titles.

These included two Copa América titles, in 2021 and 2024, as well as the Finalissima in 2022.

But the highlight was winning the 2022 World Cup. With this victory, Argentina secured their third title in the tournament, 36 years after their previous triumph in 1986.

Messi also won a gold medal with the Argentina Under-23s at the 2008 Olympic Games.

Neymar, for his part, captained Brazil in 21 matches and led the Brazilian national team to a major triumph: the FIFA Confederations Cup in 2013.

He also won the gold medal with the Brazilian Under-23s at the 2016 Olympic Games, the first in the country’s history.

Individual recognition: the story of the three at the Ballon d'Or

Cristiano received his first Ballon d'Or nomination in 2004, finishing in 12th place. It was the first of his 18 consecutive nominations for the award, a record. His most recent nomination came in 2022, when he finished in 20th place.

Throughout his career, he has finished in the top three on 12 occasions and won the trophy five times: 2008, 2013, 2014, 2016 and 2017.

The only player to have won the Ballon d'Or more times than Cristiano is Messi.

The Argentine received his first nomination in 2006, when he finished in 20th place. It was the first of his 17 nominations for the award. The most recent one was this very year (2026), when he finished in fifth place.

Messi has finished in the top three on 14 occasions and has won the trophy a record eight times: 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2019, 2021 and 2023.

Neymar received his first Ballon d'Or nomination in 2011, whilst still at Santos – a rare feat for a player playing outside Europe. On that occasion, he finished in tenth place.

It was the first of his nine nominations for the award, the highest number amongst Brazilian players, alongside two-time winner Ronaldo Nazário. After eight consecutive nominations, his most recent appearance came in 2021, when he finished in 16th place.

Neymar finished in the top three on two occasions, coming third in both 2015 and 2017. Despite this, he has never won the trophy.
