The rise of a promising young player

Yesterday, it was announced that the 19-year-old Portuguese talent Rodrigo Mora is set to sign for Roma, of Italy’s Serie A.

The versatile attacking midfielder has spent the last two seasons establishing himself not only as a key player in Porto’s first team, but also as one of the most exciting young prospects in world football.

Football has always been a part of Mora’s life. His father, José Manuel, was also a player, and he began playing as a child at his hometown club, Custóias FC.

After distinguishing himself as captain of his team in a local youth tournament at the age of nine, Mora joined Porto’s youth academy in 2016.

At the ‘Dragões’, Mora matured and developed his talent as a technical and creative attacking midfielder. In June 2023, aged 16, he signed his first professional contract with the club.

The following season, Mora earned a place in Porto’s B team, in the Portuguese second division, and was also part of the squad that reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Youth League. In that competition, he finished among the top scorers with seven goals.

Mora was also the top scorer at the 2024 UEFA European Under-17 Championship, with five goals, as well as being named in the Tournament Team of the Tournament, despite the defeat to Italy in the final.

His breakthrough at Porto

Mora was promoted to Porto’s first team ahead of the 2024–25 season and made his debut in September. At 17, he became the seventh-youngest player in the club’s history to make an appearance.

The following month, he scored his first goal for the first team, becoming the fourth-youngest player in Porto’s history to find the net.

Although then-manager Vítor Bruno initially showed some caution in giving the youngster a chance, Mora gradually earned his place through strong performances, goals and assists, eventually establishing himself in the starting line-up.

He finished that season with 10 goals for Porto, who finished third in the league, and was the highest-scoring Under-20 player across Europe’s top seven leagues. He even finished ahead of the likes of Désiré Doué and Lamine Yamal, a two-time winner of the Kopa Trophy.

In May, Mora was also part of the Portugal senior squad that won the UEFA Nations League for the second time, although he did not take to the pitch.

At the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, he scored against Al-Ahly and became the youngest European player to score a goal in the competition’s history.

A transfer that almost happened

Following the tournament a year ago, there was widespread speculation that Mora could be set to join the Saudi Pro League, with Al-Ittihad emerging as his most likely destination.

The transfer seemed increasingly likely following Francesco Farioli’s appointment as Porto manager. The new manager’s system did not appear to suit Mora’s style of play, whilst the arrival of Gabri Veiga further increased competition in midfield.

The Saudi club, however, was unable to meet Porto’s demands, and the deal ultimately fell through.

Over the course of the following season, Mora gradually adapted to Farioli’s system and became an important creative option for the team. At the end of the campaign, Porto regained the Portuguese title after a three-year wait, as well as lifting the Cândido de Oliveira Super Cup.

It was also during that season that Mora received his first nomination for the Kopa Trophy, in recognition of his fine performances for Porto and his potential as one of the most promising young talents in world football.

Despite this, under Farioli’s management, the talented attacking midfielder ended up being more of a squad option than a guaranteed starter.

Consequently, during this European summer transfer window, the move that had failed to materialise a year earlier finally went through. However, rather than heading to the Saudi Pro League, Mora is set to join one of the most traditional clubs in Italy’s Serie A.

The new challenge at Roma

Roma have signed Mora following a season in which they finished third in the league but were knocked out in the round of 16 of both the Coppa Italia and the UEFA Europa League.

The club’s most recent title was the UEFA Conference League, won in 2022, when the team was managed by the legendary Portuguese manager José Mourinho. The following year, Roma reached the final of the Europa League, but were ultimately defeated by Sevilla.

Mourinho subsequently left the club, and the team is now managed by the experienced Italian manager Gian Piero Gasperini, who won the Europa League with Atalanta in 2024.

Now, Mora arrives at Roma with the aim of making his mark. Apart from Mourinho, only one other Portuguese player can claim to have done so: former goalkeeper Rui Patrício, who played for the club between 2021 and 2024.

Mora’s new team-mates

Mora is Roma’s sixth major signing of this transfer window, alongside 27-year-old Dutch forward Donyell Malen (from Aston Villa); 23-year-old Italian centre-back Daniele Ghilardi (from Hellas Verona); 21-year-old Argentine forward Santiago Castro (from Bologna); 22-year-old Greek defender Konstantinos Koulierakis (from Wolfsburg); and 28-year-old Argentine full-back Nahuel Molina (from Atlético Madrid).

Although there are no other Portuguese players in the current squad, Mora will find a Portuguese-speaking teammate who can help him settle in: the 22-year-old Brazilian full-back Wesley.

To compensate for Mora’s departure, Porto have also strengthened their squad during this transfer window with striker André Silva, a product of the club’s youth academy who has joined from Elche, and South Korean midfielder Hwang In-beom, who was previously at Feyenoord. The club is also reportedly interested in signing Mexican striker Santiago Giménez from Milan.
