Another historic victory
Last Wednesday, Luis Enrique’s Paris Saint-Germain beat Unai Emery’s Aston Villa 2–1 to claim the UEFA Super Cup title once again in Salzburg.
Although most of the headlines will focus on the goalscorers – the Georgian Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and the Frenchman Désiré Doué (for PSG), as well as the young talent Brian Madjo (for Aston Villa) – another player deserves special mention for the French side's victory: Marquinhos.
With this victory, the 32-year-old PSG captain has become the first player in football history to win 40 titles for a single club.
The Brazilian has been a constant presence in the Parisian side since his arrival in 2013.
Since then, he has made 524 appearances for the club, scoring 43 goals and providing 12 assists.
In 2019, he received his first – and, to date, only – nomination for the ‘Ballon d’Or’.
A career marked by titles
Since Thiago Silva’s departure for Chelsea in 2020, Marquinhos has taken over the PSG captain’s armband on a permanent basis.
It was under his defensive leadership that PSG won their first Champions League title in 2025, beating Inter Milan – a title the team successfully defended this year against Arsenal.
Marquinhos’ 40 titles for PSG represent an impressive record: one title for every 13 matches.
Marquinhos’ titles with PSG:
-
11x Ligue 1
-
10x Trophée des Champions
-
8x Coupe de France
-
6x French League Cup
-
2x UEFA Super Cup
-
2x UEFA Champions League
-
1x FIFA Intercontinental Cup
The Brazilian with the most titles in history
Another significant record broken by Marquinhos with this victory is that he is now, on his own, the Brazilian with the most titles in football history, totalling 43: 40 for PSG (listed above), two for the Brazilian national team (the 2016 Olympic gold medal and the 2019 Copa América) and one for Corinthians (the 2012 Copa Libertadores).
Previously, he shared the top spot on this list with right-back Dani Alves.
With this achievement, Marquinhos also becomes the second-most decorated player in the history of football, behind only Lionel Messi, who has 46.
Players with the most titles in football history:
-
Lionel Messi – 46 titles
-
Marquinhos – 43 titles
-
Dani Alves – 42 titles
More than just a captain
Few players have become as synonymous with their clubs as Marquinhos has become with PSG in recent years.
Will he continue to add to his trophy haul in the coming seasons?
The way things are going, it seems to be only a matter of time.
