However, there is one detail about his identity that many are unaware of: Yamal is not his surname. It is his middle name.

Unlike most footballers, who have their father’s or mother’s surname on their shirts, the striker has both his given names on the back: Lamine Yamal.

Behind this decision lies a promise and an act of mutual support that his family experienced before he was born.

The true origin of the name ‘Lamine Yamal’

To understand this story, we must go back to the period before his birth in Esplugues de Llobregat, when his parents, Mounir Nasraoui and Shaila Ebana, were living in the Rocafonda neighbourhood of Mataró.

At that time, the couple were facing serious financial difficulties in covering basic household expenses. Making ends meet was no easy task. Neither of them was older than 21.

In his book ‘The Lamine Yamal Phenomenon’, journalist Pedro Molina describes the circumstances they faced: “Like any couple expecting their first child, they were worried about the situation because they were living from hand to mouth.”

Amidst this uncertainty, two neighbours from the neighbourhood became a vital source of support for the couple during the pregnancy.

One of them was a resident of Gambian origin who worked as a taxi driver in Mataró, called Lamine (which in Arabic means ‘the faithful’).

The other was a very close friend of African origin, named Yamal (which means ‘beauty’ in Arabic).

In recognition of the selfless help both men provided during the most difficult months, Mounir and Shaila made a pact: to name their future son in their honour.

“In gratitude to their unconditional friends, they named him Lamine Yamal,” Molina explains in his book. This is how he was officially registered: Lamine Yamal Nasraoui Ebana.

Although the striker takes enormous pride in his two surnames, wearing “Lamine Yamal” on his back is a constant reminder of his origins and the value of loyalty.

Every time he takes to the pitch with FC Barcelona or the Spanish national team, the nominee for the 2026 Ballon d'Or pays tribute to the solidarity of those two neighbours and the efforts of his family.
