With 16 goal involvements for Freiburg in 2025/26 and three World Cup goals this is a deserved first recognition for Johan Manzambi in the Ballon d’Or.

Gaining the world’s attention

A casual observer may assume that Aston Villa were enticed into signing Johan Manzambi in July 2026, by the midfielder’s impressive World Cup displays a month prior.

The reality is that the 20-year-old already topped several club’s shopping lists after his performances for Freiburg across 2025/26 confirmed beyond any doubt that he was a force to be reckoned with.

Still, his World Cup heroics for Switzerland didn’t exactly hurt his reputation, making a 19 minute cameo against Bosnia that produced two well-taken goals. That warranted a start in the A-Team’s next group game and again he shone, both scoring and assisting as Canada were overcome.

Another assist in the Round of 32 prompted his name to be typed into search engines around the world, as football fans checked out who this exciting prospect was, but regrettably then came a knee injury that ended the youngster’s tournament.

The Swiss, for their part, progressed to the quarter-finals, their joint-best World Cup finish.

Emergence of a Swiss diamond

Going into the World Cup it was reported that Newcastle United were the front-runners to sign one of the hottest young talents in European football, their interest subsequently strengthening with every eye-catching display in the Americas.

Aston Villa though, also coveted the Geneva-born star, especially after encountering his fleet-footed ingenuity first-hand when Freiburg were faced in the Europa League final.

So notable were Manzambi’s performances in the competition he was named Europa League Young Player of the Season.

Add to this, two seasons of excellence in the Bundesliga with the Breisgau-Brasilianer and the player’s list of suitors was long by the time he switched his attention to international matters.

His destination, however, was always going to be the Premier League, that much was clear. Growing up in Geneva he watched the English top-flight religiously, though intriguingly all of his heroes were goalkeepers, his favoured position until his father and elder brother persuaded him to play outfield.

That proved to be a wise decision by his immediate family when on July 17, 2026, Villa paid a club record sum north of £50m to secure his attacking services.

Adventuring all across the pitch

Not that scoring goals and attacking is Manzambi’s sole attribute.

Granted, he is a box-crashing No 10 and a high-energy ball-carrier rolled into one. But the player’s versatility makes him a valuable asset for Villa, as the list below illustrates.

As for other in-game qualities, it may seem odd but one of his biggest pluses lies in his ability to draw fouls, winning 3.3 of them per 90 last season. Only two players in Europe’s big five leagues won more.

Then there’s his passing to consider, adventurous and always proactive. Averaging 0.72 key passes last season, Manzambi’s assists are rarely routine.

Speaking of which, it is well worth noting that seven of his ten league goal involvements in 2025/26 were at the expense of sides who finished in the top half of the Bundesliga.

Not only have Villa signed a young player destined for the top – who has been compared in playing style to multiple Ballon d’Or nominee Michael Ballack – but evidently they possess too, a talent who thrives on the big occasions.
