Cristiano Ronaldo has officially announced his retirement from the Portuguese national team, bringing an extraordinary international career to a close.

The five-time Ballon d'Or winner leaves behind an unrivalled legacy: a record number of appearances across six different World Cups, 146 goals for Portugal – the highest tally in the history of international football – and a starring role in winning the country’s first major title, Euro 2016.

The news sparked a wave of tributes on social media, not only from players but also from clubs, leagues and associations that have been part of his career.

We have compiled some of the most memorable messages dedicated to the star player.

The clubs: a career that left its mark wherever he went

CR7’s career began in his native country, Portugal, at Sporting CP.

After coming through the youth ranks, Ronaldo played one season as a professional, in 2002–03.

The club’s official Instagram account posted:

Thank you for everything you’ve done for our Nation 💚🐐 Forever in Portugal’s history 🇵🇹 (@sportingcp)

At the age of 18, Ronaldo moved to Manchester United, where he would go on to become one of the greatest stars in the club’s history.

During his first spell there, he scored 118 goals and won three consecutive Premier League titles, as well as an FA Cup, two League Cups, an English Super Cup, a FIFA Club World Cup and – of course – the UEFA Champions League in the 2007–08 season. At the end of that year, he received the first of his five Ballon d'Or trophies.

In 2021, he returned to United for a second spell lasting two seasons, scoring a further 27 goals.

The club posted on Instagram:

Congratulations on an incredible international career, @Cristiano 🐐🇵🇹 Enjoy your retirement ❤️ (@manutd)

In 2009, aged 24, CR7 joined Real Madrid. Over the course of nine seasons, he cemented his place amongst the greatest players of all time.

Ronaldo scored an impressive 450 goals for Los Merengues, almost 100 more than Karim Benzema, who sits second in the club’s all-time scoring charts with 354.

His trophy haul was also extraordinary: two La Liga titles, two Copa del Rey titles, two Spanish Super Cups, two UEFA Super Cups, three FIFA Club World Cups and four UEFA Champions League titles.

It was during his time at the Spanish club that he won his other four Ballon d'Or awards, in 2013, 2014, 2016 and 2017.

Real Madrid have not yet posted a tribute to CR7 on their Instagram profile following the announcement of his retirement from the Portuguese national team.

In 2018, aged 33, Ronaldo moved to Juventus in Italy’s Serie A. He remained at the club for three seasons, scoring 101 goals and winning two Serie A titles, one Coppa Italia and two Supercoppa Italiana titles.

The message from the Old Lady was brief but heartfelt:

Congratulations on an incredible international career with Portugal, Cristiano 🇵🇹 (@juventus)

After his second spell at Manchester, CR7 joined Al-Nassr of the Saudi Pro League in early 2023, aged 37. That is where he continues to play today.

So far, he has scored 138 goals for the club, becoming its all-time leading goalscorer. He has also helped the team win two titles: the Saudi Championship and the Arab Champions League.

Al-Nassr have published several messages paying tribute to their star player. One of them highlighted Ronaldo’s importance to Portugal and the new chapter in his career:

🐐 An inspiration to generations… and an extraordinary sporting legacy. He has bid farewell to Portugal, but will remain in the hearts of people all over the world. One chapter has come to an end… but a new story is yet to be written with his club, Al-Nassr. 💛 For years, you carried the dreams of a nation on your shoulders 🇵🇹 Now, you leave behind a legacy that generations will cherish in their hearts. Thank you, @Cristiano. (@alnassr)

Another post was even more poetic in celebrating the bond between the player, the club and the city of Riyadh:

🐐 Our fans continue to chant your name, and Riyadh celebrates your presence. Our passion and ambition remain stronger than ever, and we still have so much to experience together. And, in the colours of Al-Nassr, celebrations and glories await us, with the whole world watching. 💛 There are still chapters to be written in this story. 📜 Your name continues to echo through our home. Our ambitions continue to stretch beyond the horizon. And the story of Cristiano and Al-Nassr still has the world turning its pages. 💛📜 (@alnassr)

The message sums up Ronaldo’s current situation well: a historic chapter with Portugal has come to an end, but his journey in club football continues.

The leagues: recognition from different countries

The first professional league Ronaldo played in, the Portuguese League, made a point of paying tribute to the player who took his first steps in top-flight football in its competition.

Among the messages posted on Instagram were:

You’ve written a golden chapter in Portuguese football 🇵🇹 Thank you for everything, Cristiano 👏 (@ligaportugal)

and

You’ve flown the Portuguese flag far and wide 💫 Thank you, Captain 🇵🇹 7️⃣ (@ligaportugal)

The Premier League, where CR7 shone for Manchester United, also paid tribute:

Congratulations on a historic international career, @cristiano ❤️ (@premierleague)

Meanwhile, the official accounts of Spain’s La Liga and Italy’s Serie A had not yet posted tributes to the Portuguese star on their pages. The Saudi Pro League, on the other hand, made a point of celebrating his career:

What an international career we’ve witnessed, Ronaldo! (@spl)

The competition’s Brazilian account also posted a special message:

In the hall of fame! @cristiano, your history in the @portugal shirt is eternal! The #Sauditão is so proud of you! ♥️🇵🇹 (@spl.br)

The federations: a legacy that transcends borders

UEFA, the governing body for European football, responded to Ronaldo’s announcement on Instagram by highlighting his key achievements for the national team:

What an international career! One EURO title, two UEFA Nations League titles and a legacy that will last forever. Thank you, @Cristiano! (@uefa)

FIFA, the governing body of world football, chose to highlight one of the Portuguese star’s most extraordinary feats: being the first player to score goals in six different editions of the World Cup:

The first player to score goals in six different editions of the @FIFAWorldCup 🙌 Congratulations on an incredible international career, @Cristiano! 🤝 (@fifa)

Portugal: a send-off worthy of a legend

Naturally, no tribute would be as meaningful as that from the Portuguese national team itself, the nation that is now bidding farewell to its all-time leading goalscorer and the man responsible for so many unforgettable memories.

Alongside a moving retrospective video, the national team’s official account posted:

A story that will live on forever. 𝙊𝙗𝙧𝙞𝙜𝙖𝙙𝙤 𝙥𝙤𝙧 𝙩𝙪𝙙𝙤, 𝘾𝙖𝙥𝙞𝙩𝙖̃𝙤 🐐⭐️ (@portugal)

In another post, the national team celebrated the statistics that define an unprecedented journey:

Matches: 234. Goals: 146. Legacy: ∞. (@portugal)

And the feeling is, naturally, mutual. In the caption of his own farewell post, Ronaldo left a simple yet deeply meaningful message:

Portugal will always be in my heart. (@cristiano)

A legacy that knows no farewells

Cristiano Ronaldo’s retirement from international football marks the end of an era for Portugal. He played 234 matches, scored 146 goals, won three historic titles and created moments that will remain forever etched in the nation’s memory.

The tributes from clubs, leagues and federations show that his impact extends far beyond Portugal’s borders. From Lisbon to Manchester, from Madrid to Turin and Riyadh, every chapter has left its mark.

Ronaldo may have bid farewell to Portugal, but his legacy will live on, inspiring generations and echoing forever through the history of football.
