Ronaldo 2008 well clear at the top
Who will be voted the greatest ever Ballon d'Or winner? The BOAT vote, which opened at the start of October, continues until Tuesday 27 October. And for the moment, Cristiano Ronaldo’s 2008 Ballon d’Or is leading the poll with 75 per cent of the vote.
That year, the Portuguese star swept the board: the Premier League, the Champions League with Manchester United, the European Golden Shoe and 42 goals across all competitions. For the vast majority of you, this is the greatest Ballon d’Or in history.
Messi in 2012 and Ronaldo in 2017 complete the podium
Lionel Messi’s 2012 Ballon d’Or* is in second place with 9 per cent of the vote. It was a year in which the Argentine scored 91 goals over the calendar year, a record that still stands. But the gap between him and Ronaldo’s 2008 win remains considerable for now.
The podium is rounded off by another of Cristiano Ronaldo’s Ballon d’Ors, the 2017 award, with 6 per cent of the vote. In other words, two of the top three places go to the Portuguese player
The other legends are a long way behind
The other legends in the running – Ronaldo Nazário, van Basten, Platini, Cruyff, Keegan, Beckenbauer and Di Stéfano – remain a long way behind, with barely 0.4 per cent of the votes between them.
Voting remains open and the results could still change. It’s up to you to choose the greatest Ballon d’Or winner of all time.
And that’s not all – by taking part in the vote, you’ll automatically be entered into a prize draw where you could win a ticket to next year’s Ballon d’Or ceremony ! Vote here : https://ballondor.com/vote
