Though it has not yet been officially confirmed, this Sunday’s hosting of Aston Villa is widely expected to be Pep Guardiola’s final game in charge of Manchester City. It is a departure that has been speculated on for several weeks now, with whispers steadily rising in volume to open conversations being held in the media ranks.

In the build-up to last week’s FA Cup Final, the manager was asked about his immediate future so often that he responded by turns with humour and irritation.

In the last 24 hours however the narrative has notably shifted to firmer ground, with the BBC stating that sources have told them that the ‘managerial great is expected to leave Etihad Stadium at the end of the season’.

The Daily Mail meanwhile went with a more definitive tone, stating that the Catalan grandmaster ‘will stand down’ at this season’s conclusion.

Should Guardiola indeed move on this summer, he leaves behind a decade-long legacy of dominance that has seen City scale unprecedented heights.

On six occasions, the Blues have secured league crowns, while in 2021 he led his side to Champions League success, beating Inter Milan in Istanbul.

In 2017/18, City gained the moniker of ‘Centurions’ after setting an English top-flight record of 100 points in a season. A year later they swept the board domestically, winning all three major trophies plus the Community Shield.

The current Ballon d’Or recipient Rodri was an exceptional talent when City procured him from Atletico Madrid in 2019. He was turned into a world beater by Guardiola.

Trophies won in Guardiola era

Naturally, the probable departure of one the most successful and influential figures in modern football is set to dominate the news cycle in the coming days, but a side-story is also of interest, that of City unveiling their newly extended North Stand this weekend.

According to numerous reports, the club intend to rename the stand in Guardiola’s honour; to reflect the immeasurable impact he has made on the club since joining in 2016. An announcement on this is said to be forthcoming.

When the prospect was put to the City coach recently he modestly deflected, saying:

“I have no idea about that. They don’t have to do anything, honestly.”

“The important thing in our lives is when you look back and say ‘wow’ and you can do it with a big smile, that is good.”

This Sunday is set to be an emotional day at the Etihad, with John Stones and Bernardo Silva also leaving the Mancunian giants. The latter has been nominated for a Ballon d’Or on three occasions, twice finishing ninth in the voting.
