Around a decade ago, Bayern Munich dominated the elite of world football with undisputed authority. Much of that success in Germany and across Europe was down to the presence of one of the most feared and memorable partnerships in the history of the sport: Arjen Robben and Franck Ribéry.
Together, they marked a golden era and set a standard of excellence on the Bavarian side’s wings. However, since their departure, the club has spent several seasons searching for players capable of delivering that same consistent impact.
Great talents have passed through the Allianz Arena, but matching the standards of performance, goals and leadership set by the Dutchman and the Frenchman seemed an impossible task for any winger.
That situation changed with the arrival of Luis Díaz. The Colombian forward arrived in Munich to do the position proud and take on the enormous responsibility of being the game-changing player the team needed, in a well-established attacking trio alongside Michael Olise and Harry Kane.
In his first season in German football, his impact has been immense. Díaz has racked up 26 goals and 17 assists across all competitions. These are impressive figures that see him surpass the best individual seasons of past icons.

With this level of effectiveness, ‘El Guajiro’ has restored that constant threat down the left flank to the team. Thanks to his consistent performances, Bayern Munich are once again firmly in control and can dream big: the goal of winning the treble is once again a real possibility.
However, achieving these figures in such a short time was no automatic process. Behind this brilliant season lies a huge personal challenge: a drastic cultural shift and a new language that the Colombian had to face from day one.
Adaptation: The dressing room as a family
Luis Díaz’s transfer from Liverpool to Bayern Munich in the summer of 2025 marked a radical change in his career. Arriving in Bavaria meant facing a clear culture shock: a new country, a different climate and, above all, the complex barrier of the German language.
For many South Americans, this transition period usually takes months to adapt to. For the Colombian, however, the impact was immediate and his importance on the pitch was evident from the start.
In his first official match, the German Super Cup against Stuttgart in August 2025, the winger started and scored a crucial goal to secure the club’s first title of the season.
The secret behind this rapid integration, beyond his natural talent, lay in the dressing room. Manager Vincent Kompany understood that, to get the best out of the Colombian, he needed to support him on a personal level whilst he was getting used to his new life in Munich and his German lessons.
The player acknowledged in a press conference the value of this personal approach from his manager: “Kompany was incredible from day one and was very important to my ability to settle in so quickly. He looks out for you, asks if you need help or how my family is. I feel very comfortable.”
"From day one, my teammates and the club made me feel very welcome right from the start, and although learning the language is a bit difficult, they made me feel like part of the family," said Díaz.
Whilst the winger continues to polish his German, on the pitch he has proven himself worthy of a club like Bayern Munich. So much so that he has now become one of the players of the moment.
The perfect trio: A lethal attacking line-up
Being one of the players of the moment is the result of outstanding individual performance, but also of fitting into the right system. Luis Díaz’s success at Bayern Munich is based on the tactical chemistry he has developed with his two attacking teammates: Harry Kane and Michael Olise.
Vincent Kompany’s system brings out the best in each player. Harry Kane acts as the central pivot: he specialises in finishing and often drops deep to receive the ball, drawing opposing defenders with him.
On the right flank, Michael Olise plays a constant playmaker’s role, providing vision, composure and precise passes into the box. That is when Luis Díaz finds his ideal environment on the left flank. The Colombian is tasked with breaking lines with his pace and winning one-on-one duels.
The dynamic is clear: if the opposition defenders focus on marking Kane, Díaz attacks the open spaces behind him to finish. Conversely, if they try to stop ‘El Guajiro’, Olise takes advantage of the freedom to thread balls into the box. It is an attacking mechanism that is very difficult to neutralise.
The statistics back up this dominance on the pitch. Kane has racked up an impressive tally of 54 goals and 7 assists. Olise, for his part, has contributed 20 goals and 26 assists. Added to Díaz’s 26 goals and 17 assists, the trio have scored a combined total of 97 goals.
Currently, no other club in the world has managed to have three of its forwards score such a high number of goals so far this season. This clinical finishing is the main reason why Bayern Munich is now considered the undisputed favourite to win titles both domestically and internationally.
An incredible season: The quadruple on the horizon
Having won the German Super Cup and the Bundesliga, Bayern Munich have a clear path to contest the DFB-Pokal and the Champions League. The impact Luis Díaz brings to knockout matches is Vincent Kompany’s main assurance in aiming for that coveted quadruple.
But this year’s calendar also holds an equally momentous challenge in store for him. His finest hour coincides with the 2026 World Cup. Having established himself among the elite of German football, Díaz will arrive at the World Cup as a leader and key player for the Colombian national team.
“Here at Bayern, they made me feel like part of the family” – Luis Díaz
Joining a club under the pressure of Bayern Munich, filling the shoes of historic icons and performing from the very first minute is an achievement very few can match. And ‘El Guajiro’ has done so with flying colours.
Thanks to his quick adaptation, his role in the world’s most prolific attacking trio and his consistently outstanding performances in every competition, Luis Díaz has already established himself as one of the standout players of the year in world football.
