A release clause of £21m, set to be activated this summer, has led to all manner of feverish speculation about Denzel Dumfries’ future in Italy, with a number of leading clubs reported to be monitoring the situation closely.
In 2024, the Dutch international signed a contract extension, keeping him at Inter Milan until July 2028, and no doubt the Nerazzurri were very glad about the deal, given what followed. Having already played a pivotal role in Inter securing a league title, Dumfries went on to have another outstanding campaign, ultimately included in the Serie A Team of the Year. Soon after, he was further awarded for his excellence with a first Ballon d’Or nomination.
This past week, the full-back joined his team-mates in celebration as they were again crowned champions of Italy.
That clause, however, was always going to be a hurdle the club had to navigate and now that time has come with several potential suitors hoping to capitalise on what amounts to a bargain fee for a proven, elite talent.
According to numerous sources, it’s Liverpool who are front of the queue, as they seek to remedy a weakness down their right. Manchester United, Chelsea, and Barcelona meanwhile have also been named in dispatches.
A pertinent factor of the release clause is that it only applies to clubs outside of Italy.
As for Inter, they are said to be preparing for the worst, identifying Atalanta defender Marco Palestra as a possible replacement.
Dumfries missed large tracts of last season to injury, but there is no disputing his importance to the Scudetto winners. Now that he is fit and firing again another possibility therefore is that the Nerazzurri offer their prized asset a new, improved deal. Indeed, reports coming from the Peninsula suggest one is already on the table.
It’s rare for the immediate future of a Ballon d’Or nominee to be so uncertain, with so many outcomes in the mix. Watch this space as one of the stories of the summer unfolds.
