Luis Díaz is enjoying a fantastic spell at Bayern Munich. The Colombian winger has just played a pivotal role in knocking Real Madrid out of the Champions League. With a decisive goal in the dying minutes of the match, he secured his team’s place in the next round and demonstrated his immense value on the pitch.
After the final whistle at the Allianz Arena, the forward spoke candidly about what that goal meant. “It was one of the best of my career,” Díaz told the press. His statistics this season underpin his quality and confidence: he has already scored 24 goals and provided 15 assists in 42 matches played.
However, his path to the elite was a very difficult one. Before shining in European leagues and competing for major titles, the player had to overcome a childhood of great hardship, having been born in Barrancas, in the La Guajira region, an area of Colombia severely affected by poverty.
During his early years, Díaz went hungry and suffered from malnutrition. His body was so thin and frail that even his own coaches and doctors doubted he could withstand the physical demands and wear and tear of professional football. Everything suggested that his physical condition would prevent him from achieving his dream, until an unexpected opportunity arose to completely change his destiny...
The origins of Luis Díaz: Hunger and indigenous roots
That unexpected opportunity came through his roots. Luis Díaz belongs to the Wayuu community, an indigenous people based in Colombia’s La Guajira. It is a region rich in traditions, yet severely affected by scarcity and extreme poverty. In such an environment, the dream of becoming a footballer seemed almost impossible for a child who had to survive the harshness of daily life.
His greatest rival during his childhood was not on the pitch. His greatest rival was hunger. His family’s financial struggles severely limited his daily food intake. Speaking to Bayern’s official magazine, the Colombian recounted his harsh reality: “The journey to training was incredibly long and I only had a few thousand pesos a day, perhaps one or two euros. Sometimes there wasn’t even enough to eat.”
“At first I weighed 58 kilos, imagine that… I was very thin. I had no muscle at all. But for me that was never a problem. I just wanted to play football and improve. I had the dream of playing football,” added Luis Díaz himself, reflecting on those difficult times in his life.
The lack of resources drastically stunted his physical development, to such an extent that his slight build raised many doubts among scouts, who wondered whether his physique could withstand the professional level. However, the Colombian’s perseverance was unshakeable.

The Indigenous national team: A golden opportunity
In that sense, the major turning point in his life came in 2015. At that time, the Copa Americana de Pueblos Indígenas was organised in Chile and a Colombian national team was formed to compete. Díaz went for trials and his talent immediately caught everyone’s attention, despite his obvious physical frailty.
The legendary Carlos 'El Pibe' Valderrama, who sponsored and supported that indigenous team, was dazzled by his play. Far from rejecting him because of his lack of muscle, the historic number 10 of Colombian football recognised his enormous potential and placed his full trust in him.
Thanks to this crucial backing, Luis Díaz shone in the tournament and secured his direct place in the Barranquilla FC squad, thus taking his first firm step into a professional team. Who would have thought that this would be the start of his journey to the pinnacle of world football?

Transformation and success: The road to the top
His true transformation began at Barranquilla FC. The club’s medical staff designed a strict diet for him, based on protein and supplements, to help him gain weight and muscle mass. His physical and footballing development was rapid. This enabled him to make the leap to the first team at Junior de Barranquilla, where he shone immediately and won several domestic titles.
His outstanding performances in Colombia opened the doors to Europe. In 2019, FC Porto of Portugal signed him and Díaz settled in seamlessly. His goals, dribbling and pace stood out in the Portuguese League, attracting the attention of the continent’s most powerful clubs.
The definitive leap to the world’s elite came in early 2022, when he signed for Liverpool in England. In the Premier League, the Colombian quickly earned a starting place, featured in major finals and established himself as one of the best players in his position. He was even nominated for that year’s Ballon d’Or, finishing in 17th place.
Following his successful spell in England, Bayern Munich decided to make a major investment in him to revitalise their attack. Díaz arrived in Germany under the pressure of being a star signing, but silenced any doubts from day one: he adapted perfectly to the demands of the Bundesliga and earned the respect of the Bavarian fans.
His current form in Munich confirms his sporting maturity. Gone is that fragile youngster from La Guajira. Today he is a complete, strong forward capable of deciding tight knockout ties, as he demonstrated with his decisive goal against Real Madrid.
With 24 goals and 15 assists in the 2025–26 season (which is not yet over), Luis Díaz makes it clear that his place at the pinnacle of world football is more than deserved.
